willamette model watershed program

Since 2009, BEF, the Meyer Memorial Trust (MMT) and the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) have worked together on an innovative approach to watershed restoration in Oregon’s Willamette River. Through the Willamette Model Watershed Program, 7 watershed councils receive 10 years of funding and support to restore more than a dozen tributaries across one large river basin.

Combining forces with MMT has enabled a higher level of investment for each Willamette Model Watershed partner and will allow BEF to test new approaches to advance comprehensive and long-term watershed restoration strategies.

Unique elements of this program include:

  • Explore opportunities to share restoration resources (such as staff and equipment)
  • Apply new efficiencies to restoration planning and implementation
  • Improve accuracy of project tracking with integrated mapping and database development
  • Use common monitoring protocols to facilitate shared learning and adaptive management among all the partners
  • Engage in regular group gatherings, peer-to-peer learning tours, workshops and technical training to strengthen staff capabilities
